A Midwest-born and meat-and-potatoes-bred vegetable hater becoming vegetarian.
About Ice Cream is Vegetarian as of August 23, 2013
Here we are at the dreaded “About” page. Dreaded because Ice Cream is Vegetarian has only just begun and in fact isn’t even very well thought-out.
Straightaway I need to tell you I’m not a vegetarian. I eat less meat than, oh say a lion, and less than I ate a year ago, but I’m not a vegetarian.
Several years ago I gave up meat cold turkey when I couldn’t get to the remote fast enough and so viewed on the nightly news the footage of the downer cows inside a California processing plant (euphemism for slaughterhouse). Perhaps you remember that appalling video? I vowed to eat no more meat and in the process ate a lot of pasta and cheese. Because I can take any healthy food or healthy diet and make it not-so-good-for you. At any rate, as the nightly news image faded from my memory, so did my resolve.
Then a few months ago, I “liked” the Humane Society of the United States and started getting their feeds. They sent me an update about their campaign against gestation crates. I had never heard of gestation crates. I had some vague understanding of factory farming, but did a good job of keeping myself from knowing any of the specifics. When I realized that for me to have my bacon on burgers, bacon on salads and bacon on bacon a sentient being suffered basically it’s entire life, I didn’t resolve to give up meat immediately. Instead, I resolved to stop being a hypocrite and pull my head out of the sand and any other place I put it to keep from seeing things I’d rather not see.
Now I’m resolved to educating myself about the food I eat and then buying (sourcing) and eating food based on that new-found knowledge. To that end I’m learning not only about animal welfare in respect to factory farming, but also about large-scale factory farming’s impact on the environment and the personal health benefits of eating less or no meat.
So that’s what I think Ice Cream is Vegetarian is about. We’re still working on the infrastructure. Oh, who am I kidding? It’s just me and it’s not so much infrastructure as just trying to figure out how to make everything about the site look and respond the way I want it to. So please be patient with the occasional glitch. Right now it is what it is, but not quite what it will be.
About me as of August 23, 2013
As stated above, I’m Midwest-born. Minneapolis, Minnesota to be more geographically specific. I’ve moved about the country a bit and currently live in Southern California, eating more than my share of avocados.
