Even Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack apparently is opposed to Representative Steve King’s Farm Bill amendment. You know about the King Amendment – the bill written in response to California’s chicken-cage initiative and state law that would require eggs sold in California to meet the same requirements as California egg producers. We wouldn’t want to cut into any profits just so a chicken could actually fluff out its wings and maybe even turn around in the cage in which it spends its life.
It’s odd to me that King, who is usually opposed to more federal control over states, wrote a bill that undermines local authority and policies. But I guess he really listens to those egg producers in this state that can’t see their way clear to end battery cages fo
Since it seems it just may happen that a Farm Bill is actually going to make it out of our dysfunctional and non-performing congress this year, it is more than concerning that this offensive amendment is still in consideration.
